Arrow River Falls Superior Hiking

Round-trip: 2 km

Location: Thunder Bay, ON

Try to time this hike for when the water levels are low, like in the fall.  Starting at a bridge you will rock-hop upstream to a beautiful 40 foot waterfalls.  It is really interesting to see the different types of rock you encounter as you work your way upstream.

From Thunder Bay drive south on Hwy 61 for about 60km then turn right onto Hwy 593.  Follow Hwy 593 for 8.8 km and drive past the sharp right turn that 593 takes and instead stay straight on Border Road for 500m km then take the next right.  Drive on this road for 3.2 km until you reach a bridge.  There is a clearing just after the bridge where you can park.

From the parking spot make your way down to the river and rock-hop upstream for about 800m until you reach the falls.  Return the way you came.

  1. We will be attempting this hike tomorrow. Will post some photos on Facebook for sure and let you know how it goes.

  2. Great!

  3. Finally made it to Arrow Falls. It was a long trek thru the bush as the water was too high to rock hop. We stayed to the left and when we got to the falls we realized that we should have been on the right for the better vantage point. It rained and hailed and was rough going but we did it. Next time hopefully we can rock hop and go to the right.

  4. One more thing to people new to this hike. Walk down the right side of the river so you can get to the better vantage point or you will be climbing a very steep cliff to get to the top of the falls where I don’t know if you can get across or not.

  5. Thanks for your comments David. If I remember properly there is a path just inside the bush on the right of the falls that takes you to the top. We were able to get across by making a log bridge, but the water was low then.

  6. Has anyone been here recently?

  7. I went there once in September and once in October. One of my favourite waterfalls in the area.

  8. went there today. We took the left side and had to trail blaze through some un-trekked territory. Made it. Gonna have to try the right side next time. Note, turn ur phone off data cause we picked up ATT and you will be charged for roaming.

  9. Did this hike yesterday and stuck to the right side. We were in and out of the water but there is a fairly good trail in some places. I may be going back to clean up the trails a bit with my axe.

  10. Doing this hike today with 3 others, hopefully we can find it! Any tips?

  11. Went for a hike to the falls yesterday. We stayed to the left as we couldn’t make out the beginning of a trail on the right. It was decent for the first 1/3 but for the most part we just bush wacked our way to the falls. As it’s the spring the water was very high so no rock hopping for us. From the falls we walked along the rock face heading back towards the road and managed to get to the top but did not make it back to the top of the falls as we were losing sunlight.

  12. Thank you Kathleen! I bet the falls looked great this time of year!
