Boardwalk Trail

This easy hike is located in the Pigeon River Provincial Park. You can take this easy walk along the boardwalk to the shore of Lake Superior any time of year. This is a good hike to do with kids.

Round-trip: 700 m – 1.5 km
Difficulty: Easy
Location: Thunder Bay, ON

From Thunder Bay drive approximately 68 km west on highway 61. Park at the Tourist Ontario Information Centre just before the border crossing. The Boardwalk Trail begins at the back of the parking lot.

As you walk along the boardwalk you will find informational signs providing information on the area. See if you can spot the paddle-shaped boards in the boardwalk. At the shore you will find a viewing deck with a sculptured bench. From here you can turn back the way you came, or for a bit of a longer hike, you can walk along the beach and return to the boardwalk through a wooded trail.

The sandy beach is covered with driftwood and a thick layer of small wood chips, which I am assuming are remnants of the logging activity on the Pigeon River. In the corner of the far end of the beach you will find trail signs pointing you toward the Finger Point Trail, High Falls Trail, and back to the Tourist Information Centre. Take the trail to the Tourist Information Centre to return to the Boardwalk and the parking area.
