It only takes about ten minutes to hike up to the top of the steep hill, to the top of Britton Peak, but it’s well worth the effort. From the top, you’ll enjoy views of Lake Superior and Carlton Peak, as well as an aerial view of a canopy of treetops.

If you’re driving south on Highway 61 from Grand Marais, take a right on Sawbill Trail (just before the Bluefin in Tofte) and drive up the hill about 3 km, and then make a right into the clearly designated parking area. You’ll find ample parking and well-marked trail posts indicating the path to Britton Peak.
Britton Peak Hike Details
Britton Peak is easily accessible from County Road 61 in northern Minnesota and requires less than 20 minutes of moderately strenuous hiking from start to finish. It’s one of the short hikes along the Superior Hiking Trail.
While you are in Tofte, be sure to check out the Temperance River Gorge as well.
It is about about a 500 foot gain over the length of the trail.
