Round-trip: 2 km
Difficulty: Moderate
Location: Grand Marais, MN
Take this short steep hike –gaining 380 feet over 1km– to the top of Blueberry Hill for views of Northern Light Lake and upper Brule River.
From Grand Marais drive 20 km north on County Road 12 (the Gunflint Trail). Watch for a small parking area on the east side of the road, after the Northern Light Lake Road (Forest Road # 140.)
The trail starts toward the south of the parking area, then heads north as the trail climbs and winds its way toward the top of the hill. Getting up to the overlook near the top in the summer involves scrambling up a small ledge that opens up at a clearing that runs along a ridge parallelling the lake. During the late summer, Blueberry Hill lives up to its name with lots of blueberries growing near the top.
Hard to believe I needed snowshoes when I re-hiked this trail on April 16!
