Donahey Woods is a 25-acre wilderness parcel stretching for 1/4 mile along Lake Superior at the western end of Woodland Park Campground.
This pristine piece of lakeshore originally belonged to William and Mary Donahey (locally famous creators of the Teeny Weenies comics and summer residents in the Pickle Barrel House) and was purchased by the Nature Conservancy.
Access is at the western end of the campground at the bend in Brazil Street there is a small parking area. Take the path west from the parking lot to a stairway down to the beach and a nature trail. The stairway descends to a railed deck over First Creek.
A second stairway leads to Lake Superior Beach. This beach is popular among beachcombers and agate hunters. Continuing west along the shoreline for about 600m brings you into the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore boundary.
When you are done exploring the beach return to the parking area the way you came. While you are in the area try the nearby Sable Falls and Grand Sable Dunes trails.
