Mosquito Falls

While small compared to the other impressive falls in the area, Mosquito Falls holds a little charm of its own. Located away from the more popular waterfalls of the Pictured Rocks area hidden deep in the woods they are mainly visited by only the heartier souls.

Mosquito Falls Trail Details

Mosquito Falls is one of the less visited falls in the area. While the hike to the falls does not have any steep hills it can be challenging due to muddy and slippery conditions in the early spring and late fall.

The falls feature two distinct drops on the Mosquito River with a nice set of rapids lying between them. Both of them are only 1.5M tall. The lower falls are in a small gorge and are a straight drop, the upper falls feature a cascade over large jagged rocks.

From the parking area, you will see a trail sign posted where the trail starts. Take the trail to the left with signs to Mosquito Falls. Keep to the left at all the forks (the first one is for Chapel Lake, and the second is to Mosquito Beach). Once you are near the river, you follow a ridge that takes you to the top of the lower falls. From there, you follow the river upstream for 140m to view the upper falls.

I found this trail in the Waterfalls of Michigan guidebook. If you are planning on visiting this trail, some other nearby trails are Laughing Whitefish Falls, Grand Portal Point, and Spray Falls.
