The access to the Chest Trail is via the rugged Talus Lake Trail. It is shorter (16km round trip) to access the Chest Trail by going from Sawyer Bay to the Talus Lake Trail. You could also get to The Chest by hiking the Kabeyun Trail to the Talus Lake Trail and then up to the Chest, but this route is a 26km round trip.

From Thunder Bay, travel East on Hwy 11/17 . At the Pass Lake truck stop turn right onto Highway 587 and follow it for about 36 km past the Lake Mary Louise campground entrance to the Kabeyun Trail parking area on the right-hand side of the road just before Silver Islet.

The trail begins in the Kabeyun Trail parking lot area just south of the information and fee station at the south end of the park. Follow the trail from the parking lot and turn right at the Sawyer Bay trail marker just before the Sea Lion. Hike the 5.5km to Sawyer Bay then follow the signs to the Talus Lake Trail and follow it for 1.5km until you see the trail marker for the 1km Chest Trail to the Nanabosho Lookout. Return the way you came.
