The Haviland Lookout Trail is a good hike to do just before a swim at the beach. I’ll have to hike back up here again soon to get a look at the fall colours from the top. There is a small waterfall along Tier Creek as you make the 200m climb from the lake up to the lookout.
Round-trip: 5 km
Difficulty: Moderate
Location: Haviland Bay, ON

Park at the Haviland Bay public beach located on Haviland Shores Road approximately 35 km north of Sault Ste Marie. Hike from the parking area across the highway. You will find the blue-blazed voyageur trail across the highway from the old Haviland Bay Trading Post building and sign. The trail is well marked and fairly easy to follow, but make sure you bring a map and compass anyway. Once you reach the lookout, return back to the beach the way you came.
Pleased to report that this trail is now well marked and well cared for. It was an excellent workout with a very rewarding view. Outstanding hike. We will definitely be doing this one again.
We tried the Haviland lookout hike yesterday but found it very poorly marked. The hike that was supposed to be 5km long ended up being 12.6km and we still didn’t even find the lookout point! ?
Needless to say we were very exhausted, hungry and quite disappointed.
We got as far as some cabin but no lookout there as well. Please put some more signs up that actually show which way to go and how much further it is.
I would have loved to see the Lake Superior from up top.
